There is a lot happening on the employment law front.

With effect from 6th April, 2008 the Information & Consultation Regulations 2004 apply to organisations with 50 or more employees. MDN Fusion recommends that it is better for the employer to initiate the introduction of arrangements rather than be faced with a valid employee request.

The Government has announced 3.8% increases to the National Minimum Wage from 1st October, 2008:
£5.73/hour - +age 22
£4.77/hour - age 18-21
£3.53/hour - ages 16 & 17

The Employment Bill is passing through parliamentary stages and the final version is expected to be enacted in the summer. Much detail will be provided for in secondary legislation (Statutory instruments Regulations) that will come later. It is probable that the statutory dispute resolution procedures introduced in a 2002 Act will be repealed.

On 6th April 2008 the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act comes into force. This repeals the common law offence of ‘gross negligence manslaughter’ as it applied to companies.

From 1st February, 2008 the maximum statutory redundancy pay increased to £9,900 and the maximum weekly pay used in its calculation increased to £330.
