Developing people to their full potential
Emergency Budget
30/06/2010
In the full Budget document, the Chancellor announced that he is requiring each relevant Government Department to conduct an immediate review of employment legislation that is the within their area of responsibility.
The aim will be to ensure maximum flexibility, protect fairness and promote competitiveness. It seems that this will be conducted under the Coalition’s “1 in – 1 out” approach to new legislation along with “sun-set” clauses that will limit the life of some new law.
A “Reducing Regulation Committee” will be chaired by the Business Secretary, Vince Cable. In addition, all legislation in the pipeline will be reviewed. It is unclear whether this includes the Equality Act 2010 passed in the final stages of the last Government. Implementation had been due to commence in October, but there has been no statement yet from the Coalition Government whether this is to change.
However we see that references to October implementation have disappeared from the Government Equalities Office web site. We may know more as further details of the business deregulation are announced.
DEFAULT RETIREMENT AGE
The Budget confirmed that there will be a consultation on removing the default retirement age of 65.
